Learning Objectives

At the completion of this educational activity, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify three (3) signs and symptoms of dysphagia.
  2. Select three (3) interventions that can be used to eliminate the risk of aspiration for the person
    with dysphagia.
  3. Identify two (2) specific diagnoses or co-morbidities that are identified with higher speech-language pathology costs in long-term care.

Learning Outcome

At the completion of this educational activity, the learner will demonstrate foundational and functional working knowledge of the rationale for dysphagia identification, interventions, and associated sequela in the long-term care setting by passing a quiz with a score of 85% or greater accuracy.

Laurie Walthers is a Speech Language Pathologist who has been practicing in the field for 24 years. She started out as a practicing licensed speech assistant in the rehab hospital, skilled nursing and private practice settings while working to get her master’s degree. She has spent most of her career, for the last 20 years, in Skilled Nursing Facilities as a staff therapist and then moving into the lead staff clinician role. She worked as a Director of Rehab Services (DORS) for many years, giving her the understanding the balance of clinical focus to drive operational targets and being an active and valued member of the interdisciplinary team at the facility level. Laurie is currently Senior Vice President for her company, responsible for all clinical and operational targets for the company and serving as a mentor and leader to her partners, other corporate members, DOR’s and staff clinicians. She has created many clinical, educational, and operational programs that have been carried out at the facility level and corporate wide. Laurie received her undergraduate degree at the University of Florida and her master’s degree at Florida Atlantic University. She loves teaching, mentoring and leading individuals to maximize their best to support the patients and residents that we serve.
