End-of-life rituals vary from patient to patient and are often based on religious, cultural, spiritual and societal influences. End-of-life rituals play an important role for both the patient and families, which may improve the patient’s perceived quality of life and assist the family through the grieving process. This educational activity outlines the role of rituals, various activities performed in rituals, cultural aspects to consider, and how to plan rituals with the input of the patient and/or family.
